PDF to PDF/A

Convert a PDF to PDF/A-1b, -2b or -3b for long-term archiving. The converter writes the metadata, output intent and file version the standard requires, and removes encryption because PDF/A forbids it. Fonts already embedded in the file are kept, but fonts the source never embedded cannot be added here.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose the level

PDF/A-2b suits most archives. Use 1b when a system insists on PDF/A-1, or 3b when attachments must be kept.

  2. 2

    Convert the file

The document is restructured in this tab: XMP metadata, an output intent with an sRGB ICC profile, and the matching PDF version.

  3. 3

    Validate if it matters

Save the result and check it with veraPDF when compliance is a contractual requirement.

Your privacy is the point

This tool runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and Canvas. Your file is never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by anyone but you.

Frequently asked questions

Which level should I choose?+

2b for most archives. 1b when a system insists on PDF/A-1 — it is stricter and forbids transparency and attachments. 3b when you must keep attachments such as XML invoices. All three are “basic” conformance, which guarantees reliable visual reproduction.

Is the result guaranteed to be compliant?+

No converter can promise that. This tool fixes structure, metadata, output intent and version, but compliance also depends on all fonts being embedded and on the colour spaces used in the source. Validate with veraPDF before relying on it.

What happens to an encrypted PDF?+

It is decrypted in this tab with the password you enter, because PDF/A forbids encryption. The PDF/A output is not password-protected.
